Book Editing

“It's like she had a sixth sense for finding those hidden gems that could elevate my writing to the next level.” - Paul P.

I have been a freelance book editor for over four years, having worked on over 150 projects, spanning novels, poetry collections, philosophical non-fiction, and short story collections. As a Brown University graduate with degrees in English and Philosophy, my goal as an editor is to work personally and diligently with you to figure out exactly what your project needs to bring it to perfection.

My specialties include Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction, New Adult, and Philosophical Fiction & Non-Fiction, but I love to work on anything that comes from the heart.

Editorial Assessment

Traditionally the first stage of the editorial process: an 8-15-page document detailing the strengths and weaknesses of a project, along with detailed, overall suggestions about how to improve the manuscript.

Developmental Edit

What you may think of when you think of “getting a book edited:” a line edit of the entire text, taking into account small matters of syntax and diction all the way up to large matters of character, plotting, tone, and structure.

Copy Edit / Proofread

A copy edit is where the refining happens: a line edit focused on tone, fact-checking, and cleaning up the grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Finally, a proofread: the last step of the process, ensuring absolutely no errors remain.

Testimonials

“The range of value she brings, from detailed copy-editing to developmental analysis and feedback makes her feel like a secret weapon for the creative process. I do not imagine I will work on a project without her ever again. - Sean G

“Nicole is a talented editor. More than a line editor, she has an intuitive grasp of the unnecessary. Her comments on the overall project and organization of the book were like a Swiss Alpine guide.” - Yahya G

“As a counselor, I pay attention to my own inner experiences connected to clients that may add insight for them. Nicole offered her own inner experiences about the novel extremely well, which honed in on crucial aspects for refinement. I can’t say enough how valuable her time and expertise are for going to the next level.” - Andy C

“What I appreciated most was her fresh perspective. She approaches edits from an analytical/technical point of view, but also from a contextual one — which is necessary to truly polish and refine any work of poetry (or other genre).” - Yves H

“Her critiques are amiable but forthright, and draw from a broad wealth of literary knowledge and editorial experience.” - Peter L
